Gene McCarthy asked Abigail Quigley to be in his wife in January 1938. He was 22, she about 23. Their marriage did not come about soon. In March of 1942 he became a novitiate of the Benedictine order at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.
Being a novitiate is a time of testing and experience for the purpose of determining whether the novitiate and the order find it true that the novitiate should become a monk. it is a time of great reflection and involvement in the vocation of monasticism.
Gene McCarthey and Abigail Quiqley became married in June 1945.
