The picture on the opening page of this site is of an abandoned farm in Swift County, Minnesota. It is about a mile or two north of US 12 and a half mile west of Minnesota 59. The farm, the Lester and Fern Kerr Farm, is directly west of Watkins, Minnesota, the home of McCarthy Family in Watkins, Minnesota.
Gene McCarthy would have known the area well, and the area around it. He would have known Swift County and Appleton, a farming community near the Kerr Farm which was known for its progressive politics – for cooperative creamaries and elevators, remnants of the Non-Partisan League, and Governor Elmer Benson, a family friend of my relatives and a thoughtful and spirited businessman, politician and farmer until the end — until the deaths of himself and his wife Francis.
